The museum

The MAV tells the story of the millenary artisan culture of the Aosta Valley through a journey of investigation of the artisan heritage and a reflection on the value of tradition today. The renewed exhibition itinerary accompanies visitors on an ideal journey that starts from memory and then continues with matter, form, gesture and beauty. The MAV invites the public to look beyond the symbolic object to discover the variety of forms, gestures and visionary ability that are the essence of artisanal making.

The collections

The MAV exhibits over a thousand objects of material culture, including everyday artefacts (17th-20th century) and sculptures (13th-21st century) from public and private collections. The initial nucleus is made up of the collection of the Institut Valdôtain de l’Artisanat de Tradition, consisting of approximately 300 objects selected from the post-war period to the present day among the most significant works of Aosta Valley artisans, to which have been added works from the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage and Activities of the Autonomous Region of Valle d’Aosta and private collectors. The most interesting collection exhibited at the MAV is certainly the Brocherel Collection, owned by the Fondazione Torino Musei, consisting of over 500 works resulting from the great collecting work of Jules Brocherel.
