The Christmas holidays are approaching and this year too the MAV – Museo dell’Artigianato Valdostano di Tradizionale is offering an exhibition dedicated to nativity scenes.
“Nativity scenes, living traditions. Craftsmanship tells its story”, this is the title of the exhibition that opens on Friday 6 December at 5:30 p.m. and features a series of important nativity scenes created by those who have made the history of our craftsmanship : Giuseppe Binel, Jean Brunodet, Giuseppe Amedeo Chapellu, Gino Daguin, Riccardo Foretier, Luigi Meynet, Feliciano Savoye, Gino Thomasset and Giulio Vuillermoz.
The installation invites visitors to breathe the atmosphere of a special moment of the year through the elements that have brought the tradition of Christmas to life since time immemorial: the living nativity scene, the joy of sharing, stories of the past, poems and songs and, of course, the nativity scene. The latter is told through the great manual skill of the Aosta Valley artisans who have left us a legacy of the material production of a living tradition.
The exhibition can be visited from 7 December to 12 January from Thursday to Sunday from 10 to 12.30 and from 13.30 to 17 and is included in the entrance ticket to the museum.
At MAV, Christmas workshops for adults and children
At MAV, starting December 4, there are numerous Christmas workshops for children on the theme of the nativity scene : in the MAV Educational Carpentry, children will be able to make, appointment after appointment, figurines for their own nativity scene or create original nativity scenes to hang, to travel with or as shadows. During the Christmas holidays there will also be two free educational carpentry appointments for those who wish to experiment with woodworking in freedom.
But the novelty of this year is certainly the workshops for adults : three events in which to experiment with your manual skills with different techniques and materials. On Sunday 8 December the creation of nativity scenes in wood and carded wool is scheduled, on Sunday 15 participants will be able to make a wooden toy for their child in the educational carpentry and, finally, on Sunday 29 December decorative crowns will be created with wool, felt and natural materials.
The children’s workshops cost €7 with the option of a subscription (€35 for 5 entries + 1 free), those for adults cost €15. All activities require mandatory booking by calling 0165-764276 or at the regional tourism offices by the day before.

Also this year L’Artisanà is participating in AF-Artigiano in Fiera, the largest exhibition-market dedicated to artisanal products from all over the world .
